Today is International Women’s Day, a day that raises awareness about the situation of women worldwide and about the ongoing struggle for fairness and equality. This is a fight that has been going on for generations, and I think it’s shameful that the quote listed above is as true today as it was a hundred years ago. To treat anyone differently or to restrict or confine them because of their sex (or their ethnicity, or gender, or faith, etc) is shameful. It should not be taking place in a modern society.
I consider myself a feminist. I am proud of being a feminist. And for anyone who complains that feminism is anti-male or that feminists want “special treatment” for women, let me remind you of this: feminism is about equality. It is about treating people the same, giving them the same rights and the same opportunities as everyone else. Feminists don’t want special treatment; they want equal treatment. And the principle of equality is something that everyone, whether male or female, of whatever background or belief system, can and should support.
